Queen of the Night, an iconic Sonoran Desert plant, Peniocereus greggii is an understated cactus with a monumental flower.
Our Peniocereus greggii (Pe gr) are seed grown as are our Peniocereus maurianus (Pe ma) and Peniocereus johnstonii (Pe jo). Each has their own special flare. Pe gr has what I consider the most fragrant flower. It is a lucious soft perfume. Flowers range from very white to creamy white to white with a pink tinge. Some petals are pointed and some rounded. You need to grow hundreds to see all the varitey! Peniocereus greggii is native in the Tucson Basin.
Peniocereus maurianus has a stout, strong stem and flowers in March/April instead of June like Pe gr. It grows farther south in Sonora and Sinaola, Mexico.
Peniocereus johnstonii is from Baja, CA and it has the most exciting flower opening of the 3 species we grow. When your plant is in bud watch it daily. When Pe jo is ready to open, if you are around you will experience a show. The bud expands and turns into a round ball. It gets larger and larger and then, POP, the petals part and a most beautiful flower opens. Plan a party around it you won’t be sorry.
